Blue Top Ridge at Riverside, Iowa PGA Section and the VA Medical Center in Iowa City Launch Recreational Golf Program for Injured Veterans

RIVERSIDE, Iowa – Veterans being seen at the Iowa City VA Medical Center with disabilities will now have the opportunity to learn and play the game of golf for recreational activity due to the partnership of three area entities. The VA Medical Center in Iowa City, the Iowa PGA Section and Riverside Casino & Golf Resort established the G.I.V.E. (Golf for Injured Veterans Everywhere) Foundation which will raise money to fund the Golf for Veterans program, for injured and Iowa Veterans with disabilities.

The golf program will have four phases of training for veterans to participate in to enhance injured veteran’s mental, social, physical, and emotional well-being; and improve their quality of life. The phases include; introduction of golf (rules, equipment, dress, scoring, etiquette, etc.), indoor instruction at Riverside Casino and Resort, practice outdoors at Blue Top Ridge and the final phase will have veterans playing rounds of golf at Blue Top Ridge.

Iowa VA Medical Center Director Barry Sharp praised the program calling it a “truly unique partnership” that our veterans will benefit from. “We could not be more pleased to have the Golf for Veterans Program start in Iowa City; it shows a commitment from Iowa businesses and organizations to our veterans. It will bring great enjoyment to our veterans and their families.”

“The Iowa PGA Section is excited to connect our more than 170 members and some 100 apprentices with our country’s veterans of the Armed Forces to whom we owe so much,” said Iowa PGA Section President Ken Schall of Des Moines. “The Golf for Veterans Program has unlimited potential to bring more people into the game of golf.”

The Golf for Veterans Program is expected to be up and running by late summer. The Grand Opening of Blue Top Ridge at Riverside on August 1st will be a charity event to raise money for the G.I.V.E. “The opportunity to give back to our men and women in the Armed Forces is what this program is all about. It is the least any one of us could do to show our respect to the men and women who serve our country,” said Riverside Casino & Golf Resort CEO, Dan Kehl. “I consider it an honor that Blue Top Ridge at Riverside will be the host course for the program and that we will use our Grand Opening of the course to raise money for the program.”
